Soldier, sail north

The gunners on the Golden Ray, a merchant ship on the hazardous war-time Russian run, were an oddly assorted bunch. The seamen were more of a type, but the soldiers seconded to the job could hardly have differed more from one another. There was the professional Sergeant Willis, a man genuinely in love with his job. Then there was Vernon, the intellectual, and Miller, the tragic communistic misfit, who found his Russian Mecca not quite what he expected. The background and past of each of these men is skilfully woven into this gripping and realistic tale of ordeal at sea and on foreign soil.
