When their first child is born black, the baby is rejected by the mother who thinks the "fault" lies with José Carlos, who loves the child. The mother, ashamed, distances herself from her child and husband and the girl is raised by José Carlos and Mercé. Isabel, a black dancer who is in love with José Carlos, helps him when Ana Luisa deserts her family. Returning unexpectedly, Ana Luisa catches her husband and Isabel in an innocent embrace, and furious, slaps Mercé causing her to fall down a flight of stairs.
