Scrimping funds to feed his only companion, his dog, Umberto struggles to maintain his dignity on his miniscule pension. Unable to pay his rent, he is turned out by his landlady. In one of the more memorable scenes, Umberto decides to throw himself and his dog in front of a moving train, but the dog escapes and Umberto is forced to abandon his decision. De Sica based his film on Cesare Zavattini's short story, the film's unrelenting approach to its subject limited its commercial success, but it is still considered to be a masterful portrait of postwar Italy and one of the best of several collaborations between Zavattini and De Sica. Of their many collaborations, Umberto D. adhered the most closely to Zavattini's focus on the quotidien reality of ordinary individuals and his distaste for the manipulated entertainments that he equated with the films produced under Mussolini. Zavattini was one of the most prolific script writers of the Italian cinema. He spent the postwar years working with De Sica on what are now considered to be the milestones of Italian neorealist cinema. De Sica described Umberto D. this way: "the tragedy of those people who find themselves cut off from a world that they nevertheless helped to build, ....A society that allows such things is a lost society.""
