"Set in the 1860's South, Booker is the impassioned story of the boy who struggled "up from slavery" to found the Tuskegee Institute."@en
"Summary: Though born into slavery, Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) went on to become a leading educator and the most influential spokesman for black Americans between 1895 and 1915. This film presents a dramatised biography of his childhood years, specifically his attempts to learn to read and write. Prior to emancipation, it was against the law for slaves to be taught these skills, but even afterwards, according to the screenplay, young Booker had to overcome a number of problems, including the restrictions imposed by poverty, a lack of schools for blacks and the opposition of his authoritarian stepfather. Directed by Stan Lathan, a prominent black filmmaker, the cast includes Levar Burton, C.C.H. Pounder, Thalmus Rasulala, Shelley Duval and Judge Reinhold."
"Intended audience: Grades 5-12."
