Do the right thing /

It's the hottest day of summer on a Brooklyn street and feelings are running high. As the day progresses, light hearted fun turns into frustration and rage as racial tensions build and boil over under the sweltering heat of the sun. The disquiet is centred around the local bar, Sal's Famous Pizzeria, run for years by an Italian family. The local black population are unhappy that their neighbourhood is being run by whites and foreigners. The temperature continues to rise as tempers fray and the crisis escalates beyond control. [c.f. Cover notes].

  • "Set on one block in the Brooklyn district of Bedford-Stuyvesant, the story follows the events which take place on one very hot summer day. Events which would normally go un-noticed but because of the fierce heat are magnified to dangerous proportions, revealing the under-bell of racism. An explosive mix of laughter, violence and mindless destruction. (1989)."

  • "Spike Lee's fictional examination of racism was undertaken in the wake of a series racial incidents in New York, most notably the Howard Beach assault in which one black man was killed and another seriously injured by a white mob. The narrative takes place in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn on the hottest day of the year and unfolds around the web of race relations among blacks, Latinos, Italian-Americans, West Indians and Koreans that intersects in Sal's Pizzeria. Rueing the absence of black heroes on Sal's wall of notable Americans, Buggin' Out, a black nationalist, embarks on a crusade to have Sal remove Italian American luminaries and replace them with African American ones. Eventually, Buggin' Out organizes a boycott of the pizzeria that culminates in a violent confrontation between Sal and Radio Raheem, a local bully. Sal smashes Raheem's boom box and a ruckus ensues. The police are summoned to apprehend Radio and in the process, choke him to death. Mookie, Sal's deliveryman, evaluates the situation and in a moment of rage, hurls a garbage can through Sal's window. "The carnival of fury that Lee unfurl's at the film's finale combines a sixties' militancy with a nineties' vision." Throughout the film, racial strife is underlined by Public Enemy's rap "Fight the power." (Circulates)."

  • "It's the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Tensions are growing, with the only local businesses being a Korean grocery and Sal's Pizzeria. Mookie is Sal's delivery boy. Radio Raheem has the letters of love and hate written on his hands. He is defiant and together with a motivated Buggin Out, push Sal and his sons to their breaking point. The cops intervene, using force and brutality to apprehend the large Radio Raheem. He is unwilling to succumb to the over-excessive brutality of the police and the racist views of Sal and his family. The overzealous police officers don't understand the repercussions of the violence they just unleashed. The neighbors band together to protest this extreme form of pure, toxic bigotry. Mob mentality takes over and the other local non-African American store owners become threatened. Tempers flare and rage is in the air."@en
