Shadow play

On Sept. 30, 1965, 6 Indonesian generals were dragged from their beds and murdered. The murders were blamed on the communists associated with Indonesian president Sukarno, and used as a pretext for a military coup by General Suharto. A bloody reign of terror followed, with the tacit approval of Western powers willing to support Suharto's purge of communists from Indonesia.

  • "For the last forty years in Indonesia we have been watching a shadow play. We have seen the Wayangs or shadow puppets -- acting out a drama, and although we were unable to catch the words, we thought we could follow the story. But now it is finally time to peer behind the screen. Shadow Play is a full and frank account of the slaughter of more than 500,000 people in Indonesia, and the period of history that triggered it, as Indonesia's first president Sukarno, was swept from power and General Suharto took over for the next 32 years."--Container."
