Jeremy Irons and Michael Gambon star as men living parallel lives two centuries apart in this mesmerizing adaptation of Dava Sobel's bestselling book. Gambon plays 18th-century watchmaker John Harrison, who spent 40 years solving the greatest scientific problem of his age--how to determine longitude at sea. Irons is Rupert Gould, a World War I officer who discovers the wreckage of one of Harrison's timepieces and becomes obsessed with restoring the work of the long-ago genius. As the men approach their goals, they are met with increasing opposition, which only serves to strengthen their resolve.
