Roma, città aperta Rome open city

Rossellini's classic is representative of Italian neo-realistic cinema. The story takes place in Rome during the Nazi occupation where a priest who is helping the Italian resistance fighters is discovered and arrested by the SS. Magnani and Fabrizi star as Pina, an impoverished mother-to-be and a parish priest, Don Pietro, whose loyalties are tested by the German forces that occupy their homeland during WWII.

  • "Planned while the Germans were still in Rome, with production commencing only two months after its liberation, 'Open City' draws on contemporary events, often filmed in the actual locations where they had taken place, to present the lives of a cross-section of a city under terrible stress. A close examination of the film reveals the degree to which both control and openness was needed to produce the sense of immediacy and the appearance of artlessness which made such an impact. Its complexity derives from the bringing together of apparently opposed elements: the ordinary and the extraordinary, the comic and the tragic, the theatrical and the sense of life-as-lived. Physical sexuality and potential ideological conflict are subsumed by an overriding Catholicism."
