Edge of the world (Motion picture)

Tells the moving story of a remote island and its inhabitants, whose traditions and way of life are threatened by a rapidly industrialising world. To settle an argument over whether the islanders should give up their livelihood and move to the mainland, two childhood friends follow an ancient tradition and climb the island's highest cliff face. The outcome shatters the island's peace and splits the two clans apart.

  • "The tragic story that led to the evacuation of an island of outer Scotland is recalled in a bitter homecoming by a character in this drama which was filmed on location on the island of Foula in the Shetlands. An actual evacuation of the island of St. Kilda in the Hebrides provided the basis for Powell's romantic response to the theme of civilisation pitted against nature, mixing professional actors with the people of Foula. This was Powell's first 'real' film, the graphic imagery recalling Flaherty's" Man of Aran" and foreshadowing Powell's own "I know Where I'm Going". Also included on the tape is a film about Powell's return to Foula in 1978 with members of the original cast and crew."@en
