The plow that broke the plains (Motion picture : 1936)

Born in Clarksburg West Virginia , Pare Lorentz made several poetic documentaries that brought attention to the realities of American agricultural life. The Plow That Broke the Plains captures the desperation of Americans fighting the environmental disaster that was the dust bowl. An agricultural and economic collapse resulting from cash crops and overgrazing that overwhelmed the American Great Plains in the 1930's. In 1999, The Plow That Broke the Plains was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

  • "Pare Lorentz's The Plow that Broke the Plains (1936) and The River (1937) are landmark American documentary films. Aesthetically, they break new ground in seamlessly marrying pictorial imagery, symphonic music, and poetic free verse, all realised with supreme artistry. Ideologically, they indelibly encapsulate the strivings of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 'New Deal'. These two groundbreaking American documentary films feature some of the best film music ever written. Here, Virgil Thomson's famous scores, including some cuts that did not make the original release, have been re-recorded by the Post-Classical ensemble."
