Modern Spiritualism and the Church of England, 1850-1939
This book examines what happened when the Church of England met with the phenomenon of modern spiritualism. It charts the way that the theology of the afterlife changed in the Church between 1850 and 1939. The period saw a gradual liberalising of theology regarding the nature of heaven and hell and the punishment of the wicked. Some of the ideas about the afterlife presented by spiritualism explicitly influenced the thinking of some Anglican clergy.
