Jesus of Montreal

Daniel, a young actor, is asked by a priest to gather around him a group of actors to revitalise the Passion Play, a traditional portrayal of the Crucifixion of Christ. When they come up with a witty and radical interpretation of the play, they attract an unorthodox audience and the ire of the Church. Daniel's refusal to compromise sees him heading towards modern martyrdom.

  • ""For more than 40 years the Passion Play has been a success in the famous Montreal Basilica, but over the years it has become old-fashioned and the priest in charge decides a change is needed. Daniel, a young actor in Montreal, is asked to update the play. Recruiting a younger, more inventive cast, the show becomes a huge success, despite the lack of approval from his emplyer. However, gradually and inevitably, the actors find that the life of Christ has an extraordinary impact on their real-life existence..."--Back cover of container."
  • "Daniel, an out-of-work actor, is employed by the rector of the Montreal Basilica to update the dry and staid version of The Passion Play. Assembling a rag-tag group of misfit actors, Daniel casts himself as Jesus and sets out to re-interpret the famous play. Giving it more of a modern and literal feel, the clergy and the actors are not prepared for the power-keg of controversy they create. Church officials want to close the production, but the elite theatre critics exalt the performance. The debate draws record crowds by as the authorities try to shut it down mid-performance, they set off a catalytic chain of events that causes a mob to riot and worse... a martyr to be born."

• "When attendance at a churchÅ› annual Passion Play flags, a troupe of young actors is hired to stage a newer interpretation of the teachings of Jesus. While their newer, more modern version brings the house down, it also brings down the condemnation of church hierarchy, creating a strange parallel between the actors - now persecuted believers - and the authorities. But the actor, who is beginning to feel at peace with the character he plays (Christ), insists that the show will go on... no matter what happens to him in the process."

  • "Arcand combines an updating of the Christ story with a wide-ranging satire of modern society and a tribute to the joys of the theatre. A talented but obscure actor named Daniel is commissioned by a Montreal cathedral to revamp their annual Passion Play. The ascetic actor casts himself as Jesus and fills the other roles with a group of fringe performers: a beautiful model, a porno-film dubber, a frustrated Hamlet and a priest's mistress. Employing revisionist research and unorthodox stagecraft, Daniel and his disciples transform the hitherto pedantic pageant into an innovative theatrical spectacle. However, the production is suppressed by church authorities, trivialized by the media and commercialized by corporate sharks. The embattled protagonist begins to re-enact his messianic role offstage: denouncing contemporary Pharisees, eschewing the temptations of diabolical lawyers and bringing down the wrath of the establishment.
