Foreshadowing the current debates regarding same-sex marriage, A Union in Wait recounts the struggle of Susan Parker and Wendy Scott to have their union recognized and the controversy that divided a community. Parker and Scott were members of the Wake Forest Baptist Church in North Carolina when they decided to have a commitment ceremony in 1997. Not realizing the wave of protest that would result, the couple planned to have their union ceremony in Wake Forest University's chapel.
