Nel racconto "A casa", la scrittrice ormai affermata torna a trovare il padre da poco risposatosi; altrove un'Alice sessantenne vaga nei cimiteri di campagna insieme al secondo marito, è in attesa di una biopsia per un sospetto tumore al seno, per fortuna un falso allarme. L'epilogo chiude il cerchio con una visita in IIIinois alla ricerca della tomba del bis-bisnonno William Lainlaw."
