Notes on the state of Virginia. : By Thomas Jefferson

Digital application that allows users to inspect, compare, and analyze two different eighteenth-century printings of Thomas Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia, and to study a third modernized and searchable reading text. One set of scans reproduces the copy of Notes on the State of Virginia that Jefferson had privately printed in Paris in 1784 [i.e. 1785] and that was presented to the Marquis de Lafayette. The second set of scans is taken from Jefferson's own copy of the first published edition printed for the London publisher John Stockdale in 1787, which contains hundreds of annotations, corrections, and revisions in Jefferson's own hand, many of them interlineated in the text or set off in the margins; other additions appear on scraps of paper that were later inserted when the copy was rebound in the twentieth century. This website also publishes the large map that was folded up and bound in with Jefferson's personal copy of the Stockdale edition, georectified and overlaid on to a modern digital map of the world.

  • "This American classic is the only full-length book written and published by Thomas Jefferson during his lifetime. It was begun by Jefferson as a commentary on the resources and institutions of his home state, but the work's lasting value lies in its delineation of his major philosophical, political, scientific, and ethical beliefs."@en
  • "Thomas Jefferson's only book, Notes on the State of Virginia, is a rich and revealing compendium of information and opinion on the largest and most important state in the union at the end of the American Revolution. Presented in the scientific spirit of the Enlightenment as an encyclopedia of useful data, Notes is also an eloquent testament to Jefferson's faith in the redemptive potential of the republican revolution. Yet Jefferson's hopes are shadowed by his fearshis anxieties about the future, and the threat that forthcoming generations of Virginians will fail to fulfill Revolutionary Virginia's promiseare never far below the surface. Notes on Virginia, Jefferson's only sustained and systematic effort to chart Virginia's revolutionary transformation, illuminates the sources of his eloquence while offering some of his most memorable turns of phrase."
  • "Along with his accounts of such factual matters as North American flora and fauna, Thomas Jefferson expounds his views on slavery, education, religious freedom, representative government and the separation of church and the state in this classic - the only full-length book he ever wrote."@en
  • "Jefferson's chronicle of the natural, social, and political history of Virginia is at once a scientific discourse, an attempt to define America, and a brilliant examination of the idea of freedom."@en
