The Tilley treasure

"The Tilley treasure is not intended to be a complete history of the Civil War in Missouri, nor of the Tilley family." (p. iv). Wilson M. Tilley (1807-1864) moved from Kentucky to Pulaski County, Missouri, and married Elizabeth Tippett in 1827. Wilson M. and hia son, Wilson Leroy Tilley, were both sympathetic to the Confederacy during the Civil War. They were involved in mule trading, often with the Confe- deracy, although the County was occupied by Union troops. According to some of the family, Wilson M. Tilley was killed by bushwhackers seeking his buried money; other legends say he was executed by the Union Army (there seems to be no documentary proof of this). Wilson Leroy Tilley was tried by the Union Army in February 1865, and found not guilty of violation of the oath of allegiance, and guilty of being a "guerrilla-marauder" (for which he was imprisoned for the rest of the war). The buried coins of Wilson M. Tilley were found by an earth-moving contractor in 1962.
