  • "After working on his film Moana and the ensuing break with Hollywood, Flaherty went to England at the invitation of John Grierson. Flaherty discussed the idea for Man of Aran with Grierson while he was working on Industrial Britain. On Grierson's recommendation, Gaumont-British Picture Corporation agreed to produce Man of Aran, an account of life on the Aran Islands, situated off the western coast of Ireland. The film is now a classic of documentary cinema. Flaherty spent two years on the island of Inishmore, filming the Aran islanders never-ending struggle for existence on what is essentially a four mile long, treeless rock, with vertical cliffs on the western side. In this barren landscape even the soil required for farming has to be extracted from the sea. The central characters in Man of Aran are a man, his wife and their small son. The family's efforts to make a living through fishing and primitive farming techniques, epitomise Flaherty's central theme, the conflict between Man and Nature."@en

  • "Robert Flaherty's first sound film is a brilliant dramatised documentary about the Herculean struggles of a community living on the remote island of Aran off the Irish coast. The island is so barren that the soil has to be collected from rock crevices and mixed with seaweed before crops can be grown. A thrilling battle between the island fishermen and a huge basking shark essential for the supply of oil in winter is the showpiece of a superbly photographed film."
