"La preeclampsia es una enfermedad que caracteristicamente aparece solo durante el embarazo. Tiene una alta prevalencia en los paises en vias de desarrollo donde se constituye en la primera causa de muerte materna. En la actualidad se considera que esta es una enfermedad producida por la activacion del endotelio vascular, desencadenada probablemente por isquemia piacentaria la cual a su vez estaria generada por un defecto en Ia invasion por el trofoblasto de las arterias espiraladas uterinas. Se invocan causas geneticas, inmunologicas y bioquimicas para explicar el porque de este defecto en la impiantacion del trofoblasto con la isquemia placentaria que trae aparejada. Como consecuencia de la activacion endotelial se liberan diferentes mediadores quimicos que al actuar afectan el funcionamiento de todos los organos y sistemas, produciendo los diversos sindromes relacionados con la preeclampsia. El gran interes que existe en la prevencion de esta enfermedad se traduce en los estudios multicentricos con calcio y aspirina que se han realizado y actualmente se llevan a cabo. (AU)."@es
