"De todas las glandulas salivales, la parotida es la mas frecuentemente afectada por procesos inflamatorios. La parotiditis bacteriana aguda (PBA) es causada comunmente por el staphylococcus aureus. En su forma nosocomial se observan bacilos entericos gram negativos, incluyendo pseudomona, klebsiella, proteus y escherichia coli. Recientemente se ha reconocido la importancia de las especies anaerobias en estas infecciones, tales como peptostreptococcus, fusobacterium y prevotella porphyromonas. En el 75 porciento de los casos se aislan especies microbianas productoras de betalactamasas. Los factores predisponentes de la PBA son la deshidratacion, la desnutricion, la inmunodepresion y el efecto hiposialico de ciertos medicamentos. El tratamiento antibiotico precoz puede prevenir la formacion de un absceso intraglandular. Si la respuesta al tratamiento medico es desfavorable, se requiere prontamente el drenaje quirurgico.
