The Valley of the Shadow is an electronic archive of documents pertaining to two communities in the American Civil War--Augusta County, Va. and Franklin Co., Pa. Extensive public records are available; site includes searchable newspapers, census data pertaining to population, agriculture, manufacturing, and slave ownership, tax records, church records, and military rosters. The site also contains letters, diaries, images, and maps. Arranged in three sections to cover the coming of the Civil War, battles and the homefront, and Emancipation and Reconstruction after the war.
