Focus : seven steps to community involvement in educational problem solving

This model is designed to develop problem-solving skills and to involve diverse groups of people in seeking solutions to real problems of concern to them. It can be used in a simulated situation, such as a college classroom, for teaching systematic approaches to problem-solving, or it can be used by an agency or institution that wants to broaden its decision-making base and at the same time get at the task of solving institutional or community problems. Local advisory councils will find the model a useful tool to help maximize use of their time in setting priorities and in developing and evaluating programs. The model covers seven activities--recognizing there is a problem, assessing the problem, clarifying the problem and setting priorities, establishing goals to solve the problem and setting goal priorities, developing a planning guide, designing an activity plan to implement the guide, and checking to see if the problem is corrected.
