Akropolis

Presents a synthesis of the past and the present by dramatizing biblical and Homeric tales in a contemporary setting. The dramatic intensity is heightened in the Polish Laboratory Theater production which Grotowski sets in the Auschwitz (Oʹswȩcim) concentration camp instead of the Krakow Cathedral of the 1904 production. Preceded in the film by Lewis Freedman's introduction and Peter Brook's comments on the significance of Grotowski's setting.

A collaboration with famous Polish director, set designer, playwright, and Auschwitz survivor Jozef Szajna, it was performed to great acclaim (and controversy) at the 1968 Edinburgh Film Festival. The piece features actors representing Auschwitz prisoners building a crematorium around the audience while interpreting stories from the Bible and Greek mythology."
