The booklet is designed to aid social studies teachers in developing and implementing curriculum to help students understand other cultures and the dynamics of world affairs. Presented in nine chapters, the booklet stresses the importance of factual knowledge, questioning techniques, and selective curriculum content. Chapter I discusses how to develop a conceptual framework relating world history to modern society. Chapter ii explains how to select and develop subject matter which best facilitates understanding of a specific topic. Chapter iii identifies shortcomings of traditional curriculum approaches and outlines a do-it-yourself approach to world history which enables the teacher to tailor curriculum to class interest and ability. Chapter iv informs teachers about developing skillful questioning techniques. Chapters v and vi explain the use of primary sources in history instruction and identify sources of information. Chapter vii generates ideas for improving student skills in reading, writing, and discussing. Chapter viii reviews testing techniques and suggests ways to use test results. The final chapter outlines a one year world history course and provides suggestions relating to points of emphasis, class activities, and discussion questions for each of the three major units (the ancient world, the Middle Ages, and the world today).
