"Summary: Paul Robeson (1898-1976) became world famous as a singer but, as this biography makes clear, he was a remarkable man in many ways. While at Rutgers University, he became an all-American football player but, instead of turning professional, went on to Columbia to obtain a law degree. He drifted to the stage and the cinema because of a lack of opportunity for blacks in the legal profession and achieved international acclaim for his performances in such plays as "The emperor Jones" and "Othello". While touring the world as a singer and expert on folk music, he became involved with national and international movements for peace, racial justice and better labour conditions. Together with his support of independence for African countries and his friendship with the Soviet Union, these political commitments caused him to be ostracized during the McCarthy-era. Using stills, archival material, documentary footage and interviews, this film presents a portrait of this gifted man. Among those who contribute their views are Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie and Paul Robeson, Jr., who now runs the Paul Robeson Archives."
