Who are the DeBolts (and where did they get nineteen kids?)

"The DeBolts, Bob and Dorothy, are a California couple, and their 19 kids include six of their own and 13 others whom they have adopted or made their legal wards. The DeBolt's foster children are black, white, Korean and Vietnamese. Some are blind, others have paralyzed or missing limbs. And yet all, as depicted here, are happy, cooperative, and indomitably self-sufficient."--1978 Peabody Awards entry form excerpt. This program takes a look at the DeBolt family and gives brief backgrounds of the 13 children the DeBolts have adopted. The story begins with the death of Dorothy's first husband, leaving her with 5 children to raise and her being introduced to the first child she would adopt. She meets and marries Robert, who has a daughter from his first marriage. The couple then adopt 13 more children, all but five of whom are handicapped in some way. The program shows the daily interactions of this large family, how they respond to obstacles and hardships, and how they encourage each other to overcome their handicaps. Mary DeBolt, grandmother, talks about how special the children are and her reaction to the DeBolts adopting so many handicapped children. Includes a discussion of the organization the DeBolts founded called Aid to the Adoption of Special Kids.

  • "Not only do parents Bob and Dorothy have six kids of their own, they have also opened up their hearts and their home to thirteen disadvantage and handicapped children. What results is an amazing mix of diversity. The multiethnic kids are heroes who belie the typical stereotype of being handicapped. They go to school, do chores, and "hang out" while simultaniously navigating the difficulties of their disablilties."
