The fate of John the Baptist

John the Baptist sends messengers from prison to ask Jesus, "Are you the one who is to come?" Jesus bids them to tell John what they have seen and heard: the blind see, the lame walk, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news preached to them. John hears gladly of these messianic signs. Then, amid the events of Herod's banquet and Salome's dance, he is executed.
