"Summary: This film explores Dr. Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of cognitive moral development, in which emphasis is placed on the various stages of reasoning that underlie people's moral judgements and decisions. Using the obedience experiments introduced by Dr. Stanley Milgram, Dr. David Rosenhan of Stanford University re-creates a situation in which one of two participants is required to administer electrical shocks of increasing intensity to the other, it having been explained to him that he is taking part in a learning and memory experiment. The real object is to see how he will cope with the moral dilemma of having to decide whether or not to continue to administer punishment that seems painful and unjust. The film also discusses the social-learning theory, according to which social environment is thought to play an important role in determining moral development."
