  • "While exhibiting some of the basic strengths of American cinema, this film is also something of a maverick. As a prison film, it stands out for its success in balancing the uncompromising presentation of the issues militating against prison reform and those of taut action drama, of documentary and melodrama. Freed from the demands of roles for star players, it is one of the few American films in which the focus is single mindedly on the confrontation between two groups - the authorities and the protesting prisoners - constituting two power blocs. The pitfalls of a too easy liberalism were avoided at the insistence of producer Walter Wanger, who himself had been a prison inmate, which coalesced with Siegel's uneasy relationship with the liberal ethos and that of individualism evident in many of his other films."@en
  • "They have waited too long. Locked behind the walls of a maximum security penitentiary, a cut-throat collection of hardened criminals has awaited the right moment to stage a prison-wide breakout. And now they can wait no longer. Taking their guards hostage, a vengeful mob of prisioners rises up to seize control of their cage, unleashing their pent-up rage in an all-out frenzy of violence and bloodshed"--Container."@en
  • "A sensational and high-octane but economically constructed drama set in a maximum-security penitentiary. Shot on location at Folsom State Prison, with real inmates and guards as extras."@en
  • "Beginning with a single confrontation, a riot spreads within the walls of a maximum security prison. Based on the experiences of producer Walter Wanger."@en
  • ""A ripped-from-the-headlines social-problem picture about inmates' rights that was inspired by a recent spate of uprisings in American prisons ... shot on location at Folsom State Prison, with real inmates and guards as extras"--Container."@en
