Freed from the demands of roles for star players, it is one of the few American films in which the focus is single mindedly on the confrontation between two groups - the authorities and the protesting prisoners - constituting two power blocs. The pitfalls of a too easy liberalism were avoided at the insistence of producer Walter Wanger, who himself had been a prison inmate, which coalesced with Siegel's uneasy relationship with the liberal ethos and that of individualism evident in many of his other films."@en
