"The assassination of Heydrich in 1942 and the consequent retribution of the Nazis is the basis of this noir thriller. The assassin hides out with the resistance in occupied Prague. Lang collaborated closely Brecht in developing the story. Wexley was brought in to write the script which Lang cut to manageable length. Brecht wanted to focus on the mass resistance to the Nazis. Lang intended to shape a pursuit and escape drama, recalling M, as an anti-Nazi statement. Although he claimed that his ideas were betrayed there are signs of Brecht's didactism in the finished screenplay. In capturing the atmosphere of resistance and betrayal in an occupied city, this film achieves and transcends its propagandist intent."@en
