"Summary: Starting with an early morning visit to the Old French Market, where vendors hawk their vegetables in musical cadences, this film presents a portrait of New Orleans, a city where music stems from and is sustained by a culture that is unique to its people. Guided by Michael White, a local jazz clarinetist and university professor, with additional comments from other musicians, it shows how the city's black heritage, as well as other cultural elements, gave rise to the development of jazz. The film depicts a variety of events, from a street parade by the Young Tuxedo Brass Band and a house party featuring the Original Liberty Jazz Band, to a rehearsal of the Zion Harmonizers and a meeting of two black Indian tribes, who perform during the annual Mardi Gras. Above all, it emphasizes the continuing legacy of jazz as it is experienced by the social club bands and street musicians."@en
