Ancient forests vanishing legacy of the Pacific Northwest
Forests of the Pacific Northwest Cascade Mountains and Coast Range have stood for 10,000 years. It is one of the richest ecosystems in the world. Every week more than one square mile of natural "old growth" forest timber is destroyed and future forests, wildlife and the environment is threatened. The timber industry must cut old growth to save jobs, but automation and raw logs shipped overseas have lost more jobs than the lack of old growth to cut. The battle rages on.
