Playhouse (Short : 1921)

Buster Keaton's homage to the vaudeville of his youth begins with a dream in which he plays the audience, the orchestra and the performers in a small theatre. He then reappears as a stagehand who keeps the show going by impersonating a performing chimpanzee. This is one of Keaton's early short films, the sight gags, and impending calamaties, combined with Keaton's unyielding stone face sets the pattern for Keaton's later work. Unlike his greatest competitor Charlie Chaplin, Keaton fully immersed himself in the process of filmmaking looking for new ways to use the cinema to enhance his visual gags. Keaton's use of split screen in this film allowed him to play all the instruments in the orchestra while simultaneously applauding as a member of the audience.
