Anna Jameson arrives in Toronto in November, 1836. She finds herself in an alien world. She soon meets Sam Jarvis, but Jarvis has a loving wife and a violent past. She travels into the wilderness and discovers the joy of freedom. During a canoe trip down Lake Huron, they wrestle with their relationship and arrive at a settlement.
