"One of the most enduring features in the modern history of Northern Eurasia has been the nationalities question. Not only did the resurgence of nationalism in the late 1980s prove pivotal to the ending of the twentieth century's last empire, the Soviet Union, but it has remained central in reshaping the politics, social structures and cultures of the post-Soviet states. Given the scale of political change and ethnic tensions, there has never been such a critical time in the recent history of Northern Eurasia in which it is so crucial to understand the identities of those peoples who now form the core cultures of the post-Soviet states, as well as those ethnic minorities whose status's have been redefined as a result of the redrawing of the geopolitical map. It focuses on the major developments in the region since 1991 and includes a number of Northern Eurasian nationalities not previously covered. Under the editorship of Graham Smith this international panel of authors presents a work which: - boasts unrivalled systematic and authoritative coverage of the major nationalities of Northern Eurasia, accounting for more than 90% of the population, - locates each nationality within its appropriate historical, geopolitical and cultural context, - analyses how national and ethnic relations are being reshaped in the post-Soviet states in relation to issues of state-building, the reconstruction of post-Soviet national identities, citizenship and language policies, - includes a statistical appendix of comparative socio-economic and demographic date on the nationalities.
