"The settlement of Southern Utah did not come without trials. Settlers sent by Brigham Young to colonize Utah's Dixie found the wilderness almost impossible to tame. The river that looked so inviting proved to be very destructive when flash floods came. By accident the settlers found that cotton could be grown and soon a cotton mill was erected which provided a sense of permanence for the settlers.
