"During their incarceration at the high-security German camp Stalag Luft III, over six hundred Allied prisoners banded together to dig three technically sophisticated tunnels under the noses of their German guards. On the night of March 24, 1944, they planned to liberate two hundred men via the tunnel code-named Harry, but a guard spotted the 77th escapee. During the ensuing search of the camp, the guards never found the tunnel named Dick. In this segment of the PBS documentary series Nova, three former Allied prisoners of war and a team of archeologists travel back to the site of Stalag Luft III to search for this tunnel. Recreations and recollections provide details about the prisoner's tunneling and tell the stories of escapees who were recaptured by the Germans."@en . . . . . "Sixty years after the great escape, a team of archaeologists search the site of Stalag Luft III for new evidence of the clandestine operation, which involved 600 prisoners digging three highly sophisticated tunnels. In March 1944, after 11 months of digging, 76 POWs escaped from the German camp. All but 3 were recaptured, and 50 of them were killed in the ensuing brutal revenge. Recently, a team of battlefield archaeologists, armed with aerial photos and maps of the tunnel plans, unearthed one of the three tunnels that were dug by the POWs. Their intentions were not only to find proof of the incredible feat, but also to get inside the minds of the escapees. They were helped in this by historians and most of all by some of the men who lived through the daring escape."@en . . "Criticism, interpretation, etc" . . . . . . .
