"Max Rockatansky is a policeman in the near future who is tired of his job. Since the apocalypse, the lengthy, desolate stretches of highway in the Australian outback have become bloodstained battlegrounds. Max has seen too many innocents and fellow officers murdered by the bomb's savage offspring, bestial marauding bikers for whom killing, rape, and looting is a way of life. He just wants to retire and spend time with his wife and son but lets his boss talk him into taking a peaceful vacation and starts to reconsider. Then his world is shattered as a gang led by the evil Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) murders his family in retaliation for the death of one of its members. Dead inside, Max straps on his helmet and climbs into a souped-up V-8 racing machine to seek his bloody revenge."

""Dans un futur proche, les grandes nations sont entrées en guerre pour le pétrole ; exaspérées par la situation de crise, les populations se sont révoltées, les nations essaient de maintenir un semblant d'ordre tandis que des bandes de délinquants sillonnent les routes. Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) est un policier de la route, un flic (copper ou bronze en référence à sa plaque de service, en cuivre). À bord de son Interceptor, il est chargé de faire régner l'ordre et de combattre les bandes de pirates de la route ; il fait équipe avec le motard Jim Goose dit "le gorille" (Steve Bisley). Sa meilleure arme est son sang-froid, qui lui permet de faire "craquer" ses adversaires lors d'impressionnants face à face routiers. Lors d'une poursuite automobile au début du film, un voyou se nommant lui-même l' "Aigle de la Route", se tue en tentant d'échapper à Max. Son frère, le chef d'un dangereux gang de motards, décide de le venger. La Ford Falcon XB Hardtop de Mel Gibson dans le film. Quand le coéquipier de Max, Jim Goose, se retrouve à l'hôpital, grièvement brûlé par le gang, Max prend peur et décide de quitter son poste de policier intercepteur. Au lieu de ça, il prend des vacances et part alors vers le Nord avec sa femme et son bébé, loin de la violence routière. Mais les motards parviennent à le retrouver et tuent sa femme et son bébé, Paul.
