  • "Chancellor Francis Borkowski and Dr. JoAnn Burkholder discuss Burkholder's discovery of the toxic dinoflagellate Pfiesteria piscicida. Burkholder discovered the organism when she was investigating the fish kills in the estuaries of the North Carolina coast. Her subsequent research of Pfiesteria piscicida revealed that the dinoflagellate releases a neurotoxin that kills fish and can adversely effect human beings. Burkholder and her team of researchers determined that pollution created by the pork industry and other North Carolina coastal industries contributed to the proliferation of the deadly dinoflagellate. Burkholder discusses the difficulties she experienced with the North Carolina government when the economic ramifications of the dinoflagellate were revealed."
