"Three women in contemporary North African Islamic country are caught between tradition and modernity as they try to take control of their lives. Youngest of the women is twenty-something Leila who's love for Hassan must be kept hidden from her strict father. A successful doctor in her mid' 40's, Naima studied medicine in Moscow where her hopes for settling with her Russian love were crushed by pressure from her family to enter an arranged marriage. Amina suffers from constant abuse by her husband. The lives of the three women weave together in unexpected ways portraying a society where patriarchal authority gets in the way of love, sexual expression and individual freedom."

"The lives of three disparate Tunisian women, united only by the treatment of their gender by their countrymen, intersect in this provocative drama that quietly protests the continued oppression of women in North African Moslem countries."
"Tunisian motion picture with French subtitles."
"Miel et cendres tells the story of three women in contemporary North Africa. The youngest, Leila, flees a potential rape after three men see her kissing her boyfriend on the beach. She is rescued by Naima, a doctor in her 40s, who studied medicine in Moscow, fell in love with a Russian student, but was forced to come home for an arranged marriage. Naima later treats Amina for injuries reported as being caused by a fall, but which she recognizes as the result of Amina's husband having beat Amina. The stories illustrate the way in which men can maintain constricting moral beliefs about women and their given roles, and how love offers no concrete protection from this."
