Sie war als Nahost-Referentin bei der "Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik" in Ebenhausen bei München tätig (1982-1994) und lehrte u.a. in Hamburg, Bonn, Kairo, Bologna, Paris und Jakarta. Zuletzt erschienen von ihr bei C.H.Beck "Geschichte des Islam" (2005) und "Demokratie im Islam" (2011)."
