  • "The screenplay's main source was a medieval literary celebration of the 11th century Spanish hero Rodrigo Diaz (the Cid) with its theme of the loss and restoration of his honour against the background of the warring nobility of Castile and Leon. It culminates in the Cid's defence of Valencia against a fanatical Moroccan warrior-sect. Filmed in Spain with an epic visual sweep, 'El Cid' has appropriately larger-than-life performances highlighted by Heston's heroic intensity and composer Rosza's majestic score based on 13th century Spanish cantigas which also reflect a Moorish influence."@en
