"A political satire about a folk-singer demagogue campaigning to be the U.S. senator from Pennsylvania. The entire film is framed as a British TV documentary being prepared on Roberts' campaign."
""A corrupt rightwing folksinger runs a crooked election campaign while only one independent muck-raking reporter is trying to stop him." [IMDB]."@en
"Released just before the start of the Clinton presidency, this political satire was prescient comment on the corruption of American politics by the media-savvy celebrity culture. Constructed as a pseudo-documentary the film follows the campaign bus of a candidate running for a senatorial seat in Pennsylvania. Bob Roberts, is a young, wealthy, well-connected rebel conservative with a penchant for folk music who appropriates liberal touchstones of the Sixties and Seventies for his own agenda. On the surface he is a sincere believer in the restoration of such intangibles as national pride and family values but the longer he is followed about by documentary filmmaker Brian Murray, the more the candidate is revealed as a textbook case of cynicism and contempt."@en
""Tim Robbins stars as Bob Roberts, a radical folksinger turned senatorial candidate, in this satirical comedy that blends his campaign trail with singing, music videos and scandal"--Container."@en
"Leading players: Tim Robbins, Giancarlo Esposito, Gore Vidal, Alan Rickman, Ray Wise, Brian Murray, Rebecca Jenkins."
"A satirical, documentary-like journey into the world of American politics - where the message of the politician is not necessarily confined to speeches and tv appearances."
"Pseudo-documentary satire about a 1990 Pennsylvania senatorial race between a right-wing folk singer/entrepreneur, Bob Roberts, versus an aging liberal incumbent. Roberts will stop at nothing to get elected and he knows a lot about political dirty tricks and, even more important, manipulating the media to get what he wants. Robbins directorial debut turned out to be very timely in view of the 1992 USA presidential campaign."@en

"In the tradition of This Is Spinal Tap, producer/ director/ star Tim Robbins' Bob Roberts is a satire disguised as a documentary. Robbins plays the titular Roberts, a wealthy, well-connected young man running for a senatorial seat in Pennsylvania. On the surface, Roberts is an ingratiating glad-hander, a sincere believer in the restoration of such intangibles as national pride, family values, etc. But the longer Roberts is followed about by documentary filmmaker Brian Murray, the more we become aware that the candidate is a textbook case of cynicism and contempt. Only Giancarlo Esposito, a reporter for an underground newspaper, is willing to dig beneath Roberts' veneer--a habit that leads to the film's ironic conclusion. Several well-known actors make cameo appearances as TV commentators, notably Tim Robbins' longtime partner Susan Sarandon. Bob Roberts started out as a Tim Robbins-directed short subject for the TV series Saturday Night Live, then was expanded into a $4 million feature."
