"Am Donnerstag, dem 27. März 1845, nachmittags 4 Uhr, wurde in Lennep am Niederrhein dem Kaufmann FRIEDRICH CONRAD RöNTGEN und seiner Ehefrau CHARLOTTE CoNSTANZE, geb. FROWEIN, ein Sohn, WILHELM CoNRAD, geboren. Frühe ungewöhnliche Schulerfahrungen ließen den aufgeweckten WILHELM RöNTGEN mehr oder minder seinen eigenen Weg der Bildung suchen. Es war nicht der gewöhnliche Weg zur deutschen Universitätsprofessur, und doch fand das Jahr 1875 den erst Dreißigjährigen schon als Professor der Mathematik und Physik an der Landwirtschaftlichen Hochschule in Hohenheim. Wiederum 20 Jahre später, am 8. November 1895, sah der nunmehr schon bekannte Wissen schaftler RöNTGEN, o. Professor der Physik an der Universität Würzburg, bei experimentellen Arbeiten in seinem Laboratorium die Wirkungen einer merk würdigen und ungewöhnlichen Naturerscheinung. Er verfolgte und untersuchte diese Erscheinung in genialer und gründlicher Weise und erkannte sie als "eine neue Art von Strahlen". Nach 7 Wochen intensivster Arbeit reichte er am 28. Dezember 1895 den ersten schriftlichen Bericht, die klassische "Vorläufige Mitteilung", über die neuen Strahlen dem Vorsitzenden der Physikalisch-Medizi nischen Gesellschaft in Würzburg ein. Dieser Bericht wurde in die Sitzungs berichte der Gesellschaft aufgenommen, obgleich in keiner Sitzung darüber gesprochen worden war, da in den Weihnachtsferien keine Sitzungen statt fanden. Wenige Tage später war die aufsehenerregende Mitteilung gedruckt, und am 6. Januar 1896 ging sie per Kabel von London in alle Welt hinaus. Allüberall stürzten sich Wissenschaftler und Laien in das von RöNTGEN mit genialer Hand neueröffnete Zauberland. Ein ungeahntes Arbeiten mit den vom Entdecker benannten "X-Strahlen" hub an."
