A distant trumpet

Set in the Southwest in the late 1800's, this is a fictionalized account of the U.S. Cavalry and its conquest of the Apaches. Matthew Carlton Hazard is four years old when his father joins up to fight in the Civil War. Growing up in the town of Fox Creek, he meets Abraham Lincoln and resolves to have an army career. Eventually he seeks out his congressman and receives an appointment to the military academy. After graduating with the rank of Lieutenant, he is assigned to a cavalry group that is faced with the chore of wiping out the last of the Apache resistance.
