Surrounded by the highest peaks of Appalachia, Cataloochee is a place in the wilderness where two families, the Wrights and the Carters, have come to eke out their place in the world. After fleeing his violent, drunken father, young Ezra Banks has come here too, driven by the dream of owning land. Ezra marries Hannah Carter, daughter of the valley's wealthiest man, and makes his mark on the community. But as time passes, these families' beloved homes are threatened as the government establishes the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.
