"The Joyless Street is representative of the emergence of a form of social realism in the German cinema and more widely in modern art, termed the New Objectivity. One of the first films to deal with the economic realities of postwar society (D.W. Griffith's Isn't Life Wonderful had been made a year earlier), Pabst's film deals with the struggle for existence in Vienna and showed a middle-class family forced to live off the earnings of a daughter, played by Greta Garbo, who becomes a prostitute. The film draws a clear line between the exploiters - a sadistic butcher, a corrupt speculator - and the victims. The emotional and pictorial effects of the studio-bound realism is as carefully arranged as in Expressionistic films. Pabst developed cutting on movement (see also Kammeradschaft) to maintain the illusion of spatial continuity while also using montage techniques such as parallel editing."
