"Few, if any, of the distinguished military men, Union or Confederate, that Missouri contributed to this conflict matched the accomplishments of Joseph Orville Shelby. Refusing the offer of a Federal command, he raised the units which came to bear the famed title 'Shelby's Iron Brigade.' His reputation in the Trans- Mississippi theater was equalled by none, and approached only by Marmaduke. Shelby combined the tenacity of Nathan Bedford Forrest with the audacity of John Singleton Mosby. Only America's prevailing interest in matters related to the eastern theater has prevented him from sharing the luster of J.E.B. Stuart. The influence of his name and his legend from Northern Missouri to the Rio Grand is comparable to the effect his boyhood friend, John Hunt Morgan, had on Kentucky and Tennessee.
