The power of beauty : our looks, our lives

The Power of Beauty traces the importance of looks in our lives from our first hours in the nursery through childhood, adolescence, and the years as adults and parents to old age. It examines developmentally the author's own experiences, the stages of life itself, the feminist revolution that for the past thirty years has rocked relationships between men and women, and contemporary culture from high art to pop. In addition, it draws on a decade of research Friday has conducted on the psychology of physical appearance, including focus groups, symposia, and a national survey conducted with DYG Inc.

  • "Like the author, many successful people of our age were driven by childhood invisibility to create lives of brilliance and accomplishment. Through her life story and commentary on subjects ranging from fairy tales to today's fashion runaways, from feminist male-bashing to the emergence of the male beauty object; the author offers an exploration of the revolutionary new role of looks in the relationships between and within the sexes."
  • "Beauty and appearance play a pervasive role in our culture, argues Nancy Friday. Here, the author of the groundbreaking and controversial bestseller My Secret Garden delves into beauty's influence on popular media and the psyche of modern women. Combining in-depth cultural analysis with personal anecdotes, sexology, and individual case studies, Nancy Friday explores the dissatisfaction women feel about their bodies--and how it affects their sexual freedom. Her analysis is broad-reaching, examining how popular culture, advertising, stereotypes of women in the workplace, the sexual liberation of the 1960's, and the interdynamics of family relationships put pressure on women to live up to an impossible feminine ideal"@en
