"The family magazine, or weekly abstract of general knowledge" . "Founded as a weekly by Origen Bacheler in 1833, the Family Magazine was one of the \"knowledge\" magazines and was an imitation on Knight's Penny Magazine of London. Written in a popular style, it was filled with \"systematic courses of general knowledge\" in many branches and was rather copiously illustrated with wood-cuts. It was made a monthly in June, 1834. At first it focused mainly on astronomy, mythology, natural science, biography, and \"wonders of the world\", such as unusual buildings, towers, and mountains, but later expanded its range of topics to include articles on famous people and places, on New York City and State, and on geology, botany, history, and literature. A farmer's department was added and poetry and literary notices were also included. The Family Magazine is expecially valuable for its many woodcuts of towns, cities, and buildings, which give a good picture of how they looked in the early 1800s. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900." . . . . . . "Family magazine"@en . "Family magazine" . . "1700 - 1799" . .
