  • "International experts evaluate new policy directions in economic development and poverty reduction, building on the ideas of a pioneer in the new discipline of Development Studies, Frances Stewart. Combing ideas and evidence on technological change, human development and conflict prevention to address the issue of the persistence of inequality. Two-thirds of human beings live in developing countries, and half the world's population are victims of inequality, poverty and insecurity. Yet despite historically unprecedented advances in global technology, productivity and communications, the 'international policy community' still seems unable to address this injustice directly. The current global economic crisis shows that the market alone cannot maintain employment and incomes, while commitment to dignified welfare standards as a citizen entitlement can be questioned even in industrialised countries. This book aims to contribute to the construction of a new policy framework to address these issues -- building on the foundations established by a pioneer in this field of development studies, Frances Stewart. It focuses on themes such as technology, employment and growth, human development, income distribution and poverty as well as issues relating to conflict, ethnicity and inequality. The book also contains an intellectual biography of Frances that demonstrates not only her enormous creativity as a scholar but also her key role in international development policy debates."
